Thursday, 34th Week in Ordinary Time

24 November 2016
Thursday, 34th Week in Ordinary Time
Sts. Andrew Dung-Lac, Priest, and Companions,
Martyrs
Memorial.  Red.

Rv 18:1 – 2, 21 – 23; 19:1 - 3, 9a / Lk 21:20 – 28

St. Andrew Dung-Lac (c. 1795 – 1839), a Vietnamese priest, was one of 117 Christians – of whom eight were bishops and fifty, priests – who were martyred over the course of a few years in Vietnam.

From the 1st Reading:     Rv 18:  1 – 2, 21
After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven.  So great was his authority that the whole earth was lit up with his glory.  In a strong voice he cried out: "Fallen is Babylon the great!  Fallen!  She has become a haunt of demons, a lodge for every unclean spirit, a nest for any filthy and disgusting bird. , , ,

"With such great violence will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down, never again to be seen. "

From the Gospel Reading: Lk 21: 20 – 21, 25 - 28
Jesus said to them, "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you must know that the time has come when it will be reduced to a wasteland.  Then, if you are in Judea, flee to the mountains; if you are in the city, leave it; and let those who are in the fields not return to the city. . . .

"Then there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth anguish of perplexed nations when they hear the roaring of the seas and its waves.  People will faint with fear at the mere though of what is to come upon the world, for the forces of the universe will be shaken. And at this time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now, when you see the first events, stand erect and lift up your heads, for our deliverance is drawing near."

Reflection
The readings at today's Mass speak of the destruction of Babylon, the great commercial and political capital, and of Jerusalem, the great city of Israel's God.  John in the Book of Revelation speaks of the destruction of evil in the world: Babylon as a powerful city is a representation of evil in the world.

Jesus speaks of the destruction of Jerusalem in the context of how the end of the world would come: what are the signs of the end of the world and of the second coming of the Son of Man in power and great glory at the end of time. Really we do not know. What is important is that it will eventually happen. What is really and absolutely important is that we lead our lives always ready and prepared when the Lord calls us: "Be on your guard . . . watch at all times and pray, that you may be able to escape all that is bound to happen and to stand before the Son of Man."(Lk 21:  34, 36)
