The Most Holy Trinity, Solemnity

June 15, 2014
The Most Holy Trinity, Solemnity

Ex 34: 4b-6, 8-9 / Dn 3: 52, 53, 54, 55, 56 (52b) / 2 Cor 13: 11-13 / Jn 3: 16-18

First Reading:  Exodus 34: 4b-6, 8-9
Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai as Yahweh had commanded, taking in his hands the two slabs of stone. And Yahweh came down in a cloud and stood there with him, and Moses called on the name of Yahweh. Then Yahweh passed in front of him and cried out, "Yahweh, Yahweh is a God full of pity and mercy, slow to anger and abounding in truth and loving-kindness." Moses hastened to bow down to the ground and worshiped. He then said, "If you really look kindly on me, my Lord, please come and walk in our midst and even though we are a stiff-necked people, pardon our wickedness and our sin and make us yours."

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13: 11-13
Finally, brothers and sisters, be happy, strive to be perfect, have courage, be of one mind and live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of Christ Jesus the Lord, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Gospel: John 3:16-18
Yes, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world; instead, through him the world is to be saved. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned. He who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God.

Reflection:
We may not be totally aware of our habit of doing the sign of the cross so many times daily.   Yet, this is clearly an indication by which we simply acknowledge the Holy Trinity in our lives.  But since we do it automatically, it will not be surprising that its significance and meaning may have been forgotten.  It is then providential that the Church celebrates yearly the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Spirit.  The importance of the Trinity in our lives is readily seen in the articulation of the vision of the Archdiocese of Manila espoused by His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and sustained by the current Archbishop of Manila, His Eminence Antonio Cardinal Tagle.  The vision of the archdiocese goes:
A people called by the Father in Jesus Christ to become a Community of
persons with Fullness of Life witnessing to the Kingdom of God by living the
Paschal Mystery in the power of the Holy Spirit with Mary as Companion

We can readily find significant words and phrases that invite us for reflection. These words are:  Call, Community of Persons, Fullness of Life, Kingdom of God, Paschal Mystery, Mary, and of course, the Trinity – Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Such vision clearly suggests the importance of a call to a people to become a community of faithful believers ultimately rooted in the Triune God, that is:  Father, Son, and Spirit.  The Trinity undoubtedly becomes the model to follow as they remain one yet each person is responsible in doing what one is tasked to do so that the plan of salvation may indeed be achieved.  Though we tend to associate the Trinity with seemingly individual roles like Father as creator, Jesus the Son as Savior, and the Holy Spirit as the Sanctifier, the truth is that these three persons are one in the work of salvation.  There is no division of work that may suggest individualism among them.  Rather, there is total cooperation and unity among them in the story and mission of our salvation. Otherwise, a duplication of roles may not necessarily yield the best and desired results.  We have seen this happen in some communities which are put into a problematic scenario because two or more people would compete for a particular role when they may actually complement one another.  Their divisiveness becomes counter-productive as people begin to see that they are trying to outsmart one another even though they may both claim that their efforts are aimed toward the same goals and purposes.
What becomes important is how the various members can work together in order to bring about the much desired unity and harmony in that community so that it can achieve its goals and mission. This cohesiveness may then be the most powerful witnessing of the presence of the Trinity in any community.
So when we make the sign of the cross again, hopefully it is not simply out of habit, but a true consciousness of the community of the Trinity who continues to be present in us working for our welfare and inspiring us to follow their example.
