MEMORIAL, ST. JUAN DIEGO

DECEMBER 9, 2011
MEMORIAL, ST. JUAN DIEGO
FRIDAY 2ND WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR I

Is 48:17-19 / Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6 / Mt 11:16-19

ISAIAH 48:17-19
Thus says Yahweh, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I, Yahweh,
your God, teach you what is best for you; I lead you in the way that
you must go. Had you paid attention to my commandments, your peace
would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the
sea. Your descendants would have been like the sand, and those born of
your stock like its grains, their names never cut off nor blotted out
from my presence.

MATTHEW 11:16-19
Jesus said to the crowds, "Now, to what can I compare the people of
this day? They are like children sit ting in the marketplace, about
whom their companions complain: `We played the flute for you but you
would not dance. We sang a funeral song but you would not cry!' "For
John came fasting and people said: `He is possessed.' Then the Son of
Man came, he ate and drank, and people said: `Look at this man! A
glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet the
outcome will prove Wisdom to be right."

REFLECTION
In the first reading from the book of Isaiah, Yahweh admonishes his
unfaithful children for not obeying his commandments. On the other
hand, he says that those who have been faithful to him would have a
long and fruitful life and their integrity would be seen by all.

In the Gospel, Jesus says something similar. He says that his
detractors would not accept John the Baptist's call for repentance and
self-denial. These same people would also not accept the Good News of
salvation which He proclaimed to them. So what else can He do for
these unbelievers? These readings show us that many people do not want
to listen to the voice of God. Either they are too worldly, too
selfish or too stubborn.

God wants us to enter into His kingdom and receive His blessings, but
we must first listen to His words and commands and obey them. We must
acknowledge our sinfulness and therefore believe Jesus will save us
from our sins.

Let us humble ourselves before God, acknowledge our faults and ask for
His forgiveness. Then let us ask Him to teach us His ways and guide us
to walk in His paths. God is kind and generous but he is also very
serious when it comes to our conversion. So let us be truly converted
to the Lord in this season of Advent.
