TUESDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

OCTOBER 26, 2010
TUESDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

EPHESIANS 5:21-33
Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives should be
subject to their husbands as to the Lord, since, as Christ is head of
the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his
wife; and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to
their husbands, in everything. Husbands should love their wives, just
as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her to make her
holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words, so that
when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no
speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless. In the
same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own
bodies; for a man to love his wife is for him to love himself. A man
never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that
is the way Christ treats the Church, because we are parts of his Body.
This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to
his wife, and the two become one flesh. This mystery has great
significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church. To sum
up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself;
and let every wife respect her husband.

LUKE 13:18-21
He went on to say, 'What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I
compare it with? It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw
into his garden: it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air
sheltered in its branches.' Again he said, 'What shall I compare the
kingdom of God with? It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in
with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.'

REFLECTION
In today's gospel Jesus speaks of the Kingdom of God. He says that it
is like a mustard seed which a man plants in his garden. Even though
it is tiny, given time it will grow into a large shrub in whose
branches the birds of the air will find food and shelter.

What is Jesus teaching us? Maybe it could be put like this: How God
depends on us and how we depend on God. If we want to change something
in our own lives or in the world around us, we must make a start
somewhere. That start will necessarily be very small and may appear to
be totally insignificant and useless in the circumstances. Once we
take our first step in what we believe to be a just cause, we must
trust that God will help us to go forward as surely as he makes a seed
grow once we have taken the trouble to plant it. We must persevere in
spite of delays and obstacles. We must trust in God. This is a
valuable and consoling lesson if we want God to reign in our lives. If
there is some area of our lives where God does not reign, when are we
going to take the first step to change this situation?

If there is some unjust situation in the place where we live or work,
then maybe we can be the one to take the first step to correct it.
Then others will follow and God will help us to see it through. For
God's kingdom to come, a kingdom of justice, love and peace, each of
us has a part to play, but it is God who gives the increase. As
individuals, we may feel that we do not have much to contribute. Yet
to plant even one tiny seed of truth, or justice, or peace, is a truly
worthwhile thing. And we can leave it to God to bring forth the
harvest and perhaps others to reap it. Jesus began his great work of
redemption by calling a handful of fishermen.

As we worship God today, let us ask Him to help us to have confidence
in His unchanging love for us, so that when things are difficult, we
may have the strength to persevere in goodness.
