OCTOBER 19, 2010
MEMORIAL, STS ISAAC JOGUES AND JOHN DE BRÉBEUF, PRIESTS, MARTYRS AND
COMPANION MARTYRS
TUESDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

EPHESIANS 2:12-22
do not forget, I say, that you were at that time separate from Christ
and excluded from membership of Israel, aliens with no part in the
covenants of the Promise, limited to this world, without hope and
without God. But now in Christ Jesus, you that used to be so far off
have been brought close, by the blood of Christ. For he is the peace
between us, and has made the two into one entity and broken down the
barrier which used to keep them apart, by destroying in his own person
the hostility, that is, the Law of commandments with its decrees. His
purpose in this was, by restoring peace, to create a single New Man
out of the two of them, and through the cross, to reconcile them both
to God in one Body; in his own person he killed the hostility. He came
to bring the good news of peace to you who were far off and peace to
those who were near. Through him, then, we both in the one Spirit have
free access to the Father. So you are no longer aliens or foreign
visitors; you are fellow-citizens with the holy people of God and part
of God's household. You are built upon the foundations of the apostles
and prophets, and Christ Jesus himself is the cornerstone. Every
structure knit together in him grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
and you too, in him, are being built up into a dwelling-place of God
in the Spirit.

LUKE 12:35-38
'See that you have your belts done up and your lamps lit. Be like
people waiting for their master to return from the wedding feast,
ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed those
servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. In truth I tell
you, he will do up his belt, sit them down at table and wait on them.
It may be in the second watch that he comes, or in the third, but
blessed are those servants if he finds them ready.

REFLECTION
Today's gospel reading has two senses. In its narrower sense it refers
to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In its wider sense it refers to
the time when God's summons enters a person's life. It is at its
widest a call to prepare to meet our God. The whole praise is for the
servant who is ready.

The long flowing dress of the east was a hindrance to work. When a man
prepared to work, he gathered up his robes under his girdle to leave
himself free for activity. The eastern lamp was like a cotton wick
floating in a little container of oil. Always the wick had to he kept
trimmed, and the lamp had to be refilled or the light would go out. No
one can tell the day or the hour when eternity will invade his life,
and when God's summons to meet him face to face will come.

How then would you like God to find you at the moment of death? You
would surely like God to find you with your work completed. Life for
so many of us is filled with loose ends. There are the things undone
and the things half-done. The things we have put off and the things we
have not even at tempted. It was Jesus himself who said, "I have
finished the work which you gave me to do."

We should never lightly leave undone a task which we ought to have
finished. We should never let the sun set upon any anger we have with
anyone, for we can never tell which sunset will be our last. We would
also like God to find us at peace with Himself. It will make all the
difference at the moment of death whether we feel that we are going
out to a stranger or to an enemy, or whether we are going to fall
asleep in the arms of a loving God.
