THURSDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

OCTOBER 14, 2010
THURSDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

EPHESIANS 1:3-10
Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us
with all the spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ. Thus he chose us
in Christ before the world was made to be holy and faultless before
him in love, marking us out for himself beforehand, to be adopted
sons, through Jesus Christ. Such was his purpose and good pleasure, to
the praise of the glory of his grace, his free gift to us in the
Beloved, in whom, through his blood, we gain our freedom, the
forgiveness of our sins. Such is the richness of the grace which he
has showered on us in all wisdom and insight. He has let us know the
mystery of his purpose, according to his good pleasure which he
determined beforehand in Christ, for him to act upon when the times
had run their course: that he would bring everything together under
Christ, as head, everything in the heavens and everything on earth.

LUKE 11:47-54
'Alas for you because you build tombs for the prophets, the people
your ancestors killed! In this way you both witness to what your
ancestors did and approve it; they did the killing, you do the
building. 'And that is why the Wisdom of God said, "I will send them
prophets and apostles; some they will slaughter and persecute, so that
this generation will have to answer for every prophet's blood that has
been shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to
the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the
Temple." Yes, I tell you, this generation will have to answer for it
all. 'Alas for you lawyers who have taken away the key of knowledge!
You have not gone in yourselves and have prevented others from going
in who wanted to.' When he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees
began a furious attack on him and tried to force answers from him on
innumerable questions, lying in wait to catch him out in something he
might say.

REFLECTION
In today's gospel, Jesus chastises the religious leaders for their
double-standards. They profess admiration for the prophets by building
their tombs while at the same time opposing the message they brought
from God. These so-called leaders have closed their ears and hearts to
the words of our heavenly Father. In so doing, they not only shut
themselves from heaven but were misleading their flock. Pride and envy
gripped their hearts as they rejected not only the prophets, but Jesus
himself, the key who opens the way to God's Kingdom!

We need to humble ourselves, admit that we do not know it all and
cannot control everything. To follow and accept Jesus as the key to
eternity in Heaven is to surrender all aspects of our lives to him. We
cannot be Christians only on Sundays. We need to submit to him 24/7—
in how we treat our family members, relatives, friends, household
staff; in the way we handle our studies or business; and in what we do
for our community. To follow Jesus is a way of life, which is why it
is called "Christian Living!" We have to get right with Jesus if we
want to dwell in God's house all the days of our lives.
