TUESDAY 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

OCTOBER 5, 2010
TUESDAY 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

GALATIANS 1:13-24
You have surely heard how I lived in the past, within Judaism, and how
there was simply no limit to the way I persecuted the Church of God in
my attempts to destroy it; and how, in Judaism, I outstripped most of
my Jewish contemporaries in my limitless enthusiasm for the traditions
of my ancestors. But when God, who had set me apart from the time when
I was in my mother's womb, called me through his grace and chose to
reveal his Son in me, so that I should preach him to the gentiles, I
was in no hurry to confer with any human being, or to go up to
Jerusalem to see those who were already apostles before me. Instead, I
went off to Arabia, and later I came back to Damascus. Only after
three years did I go up to Jerusalem to meet Cephas. I stayed fifteen
days with him but did not set eyes on any of the rest of the apostles,
only James, the Lord's brother. I swear before God that what I have
written is the truth. After that I went to places in Syria and
Cilicia; and was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judaea
which are in Christ, they simply kept hearing it said, 'The man once
so eager to persecute us is now preaching the faith that he used to
try to destroy,' and they gave glory to God for me.

LUKE 10:38-42
In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named
Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who
sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha,
who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord,
do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by
myself? Please tell her to help me.' But the Lord answered, 'Martha,
Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things, and yet
few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better
part, and it is not to be taken from her.'

REFLECTION
In today's gospel Jesus and the apostles are invited to the home of
Martha and Mary. In the house we have the nervous, energetic Martha
rushing around getting a meal ready for Jesus and the apostles. Is her
sister Mary lazy by contrast for not helping Mary with the cooking?
Jesus comes to Mary's defense by saying: "Not at all."

Mary lives by the spirit, and Jesus declares this to be of first
importance. He is not, however, condemning Martha's hospitality. It is
genuine, it is good, and Jesus knows Martha's faith. But there is a
greater kind of hospitality, and Mary has found it. It is in listening
to the Lord, opening not only our house but also our mind and heart to
Jesus.

Most of us are, or have been, the Martha type. We rush around and work
long hours, and often for motives that are far less noble than
Martha's. Martha was working overtime to please Jesus, to take care of
his needs, to honor him.

We often forget that we can't take our wealth with us beyond the
grave. So what is our hurry all about? So many people make mistakes in
their work and in their business deals simply because they won't take
time out to think, to pray, to meditate, to consult the Lord and his
wisdom.

In today's gospel we see that Martha forgot that not only had she
invited Jesus but that Jesus had invited her, and that is the more
important invitation, the better portion of which Jesus speaks. If we
want to get close to the Lord, we can't rush around in the kitchen or
in the office all the time and leave God out there. We must take the
time to go with Jesus, sit at his feet and listen to him. This is what
Jesus expects of each and every one of us. So then, some time each day
let us stop everything and say: "Jesus, I'm here. I'm happy to spend
this time with you."
