TUESDAY 8TH WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR II

MAY 25, 2010
TUESDAY 8TH WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR II

FIRST PETER 1:10-16
This salvation was the subject of the search and investigation of the
prophets who spoke of the grace you were to receive, searching out the
time and circumstances for which the Spirit of Christ, bearing witness
in them, was revealing the sufferings of Christ and the glories to
follow them. It was revealed to them that it was for your sake and not
their own that they were acting as servants delivering the message
which has now been announced to you by those who preached to you the
gospel through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even the angels long
to catch a glimpse of these things. Your minds, then, must be sober
and ready for action; put all your hope in the grace brought to you by
the revelation of Jesus Christ. Do not allow yourselves to be shaped
by the passions of your old ignorance, but as obedient children, be
yourselves holy in all your activity, after the model of the Holy One
who calls us, since scripture says, 'Be holy, for I am holy.'

MARK 10:28-31
Peter took this up. 'Look,' he said to him, 'we have left everything
and followed you.' Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, there is no one
who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children or
land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a
hundred times as much, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children
and land -- and persecutions too -- now in this present time and, in
the world to come, eternal life. Many who are first will be last, and
the last, first.'

REFLECTION
In today's first reading Peter reminds his converts of their
extraordinary privilege in being the heirs of the prophets. The
prophets were men who were given insights into the wonders of the
redemption to come. But they would have been amazed had they known
that the recipients of such graces would be mostly Gentiles.

Peter rightly stresses the responsibility and demands a change in
behavior that illustrates a change of heart. Since the Church's model
is Jesus himself, holiness is an urgent necessity so that we do not
grieve the Holy Spirit who dwells in us and wants to work through us.
Since all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God,
they should shout the praises of God and ring out their joy not only
in prayer, but in everyday life.

In today's Gospel, Jesus promised a great reward to those who made the
supreme sacrifice of leaving their family and possessions for him.
Since they had sought his kingdom as their first priority, He would
see to all their needs, both for time and eternity. Effectively Jesus
said: "If you have any needs, forget yourself and think or me and
allow me to take care of you. How wonderful! We get the best of the
deal.

As we worship God today, let us ask Him to guide us in His ways so
that we may always experience His strength in our life.

MONDAY 8TH WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR II

MAY 24, 2010
MONDAY 8TH WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR II

FIRST PETER 1:3-9
Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great
mercy has given us a new birth into a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into a heritage that
can never be spoilt or soiled and never fade away. It is reserved in
heaven for you who are being kept safe by God's power through faith
until the salvation which has been prepared is revealed at the final
point of time. This is a great joy to you, even though for a short
time yet you must bear all sorts of trials; so that the worth of your
faith, more valuable than gold, which is perishable even if it has
been tested by fire, may be proved -- to your praise and honour when
Jesus Christ is revealed. You have not seen him, yet you love him; and
still without seeing him you believe in him and so are already filled
with a joy so glorious that it cannot be described; and you are sure
of the goal of your faith, that is, the salvation of your souls.

MARK 10:17-27
He was setting out on a journey when a man ran up, knelt before him
and put this question to him, 'Good master, what must I do to inherit
eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is
good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not kill; You
shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not give
false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.'
And he said to him, 'Master, I have kept all these since my earliest
days.' Jesus looked steadily at him and he was filled with love for
him, and he said, 'You need to do one thing more. Go and sell what you
own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; then come, follow me.' But his face fell at these words and he
went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked round
and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for those who have riches
to enter the kingdom of God!' The disciples were astounded by these
words, but Jesus insisted, 'My children,' he said to them, 'how hard
it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass
through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter the kingdom
of God.' They were more astonished than ever, saying to one another,
'In that case, who can be saved?' Jesus gazed at them and said, 'By
human resources it is impossible, but not for God: because for God
everything is possible.'

REFLECTION
In today's gospel, this man desired eternal life. But he did not know
himself well. He thought he kept all the commandments, but in fact, he
could not even keep the first one: to love God above all gods. He
worshipped money as his god. If we cannot keep the first commandment,
how can we keep the rest?

Christ invited him to sell his possessions out of love for him. Christ
knew that wealth and the abundance of goods were not going to bring
him eternal life, in fact these riches would become the main hindrance
to eternal life. That is why Christ says in another moment: "You
cannot serve two masters, you cannot serve both God and money."

Let us acknowledge that many of our decisions are made out of
consideration for money and not because of God's will. Money is a
false god. Money cannot guarantee "quality of life" or true happiness.
Christ did not want this man to be alienated; he wanted him to
confront the truth. Today's gospel says that this man went away sad,
but perhaps, this man later realized that his dependence to money were
the reason for his sadness. Let's reflect on this today. Let our joy
and eyes be fixed on Heaven.
